What Is the Minimum Size for a QR Code?

QR codes are popping up everywhere, from business cards to billboards. They offer a convenient way of linking the physical and digital worlds, but a badly sized QR code can be a frustrating roadblock. So, what’s the smallest size a QR code can be while still being scannable?

Ultra-Limited Use Case: 0.4x0.4 Inches (1x1 cm)

Technically, this size can function under ideal circumstances (bright light, close range, new smartphones). However, the significant reduction in readability makes it a risky choice for most situations. It can lead to user frustration and missed connections, ultimately hindering your marketing efforts. Not Recommended.

Close Range: 0.8x0.8 Inches (2x2 cm)

This size prioritizes readability for users holding their phone at arm's length. Guaranteed scannability across various devices and lighting conditions ensures a seamless user experience.
If you’re printing a QR code on a business card or a product packaging, where scanning will occur from a close distance (around 7.9 inches or 20 cm), a size of 0.8x0.8 inches or 2 cm should suffice.

Remember: Bigger is always better when it comes to QR code scannability.

Mid Range: 1.2 Inches (3-4 cm)

Finding a sweet spot between size and aesthetics becomes crucial at mid-range distances. This size offers good readability while maintaining a visually pleasing presence on paper or magazine ads.
For scanning from a short distance, such as on a magazine, newspaper, or a catalog, a minimum size of 1.2 inches (approximately 3-4 cm) is recommended. This ensures that the QR code can be easily scanned without any issues.

Remember: When in doubt, prioritize a larger size for guaranteed readability.

General Rule: 10:1 Ratio

As a general rule, there’s a relationship between scanning distance and QR code size: 10:1.
For example, if you want to scan a QR code from 10 meters away (approximately 390 inches), the QR code’s size should be 1 square meter (approximately 39 inches).

Considering the 10:1 distance-to-size ratio for QR Codes, we have compiled this quick reference guide for various QR Code use cases:

QR Code use case Typical scanning distance Typical QR Code size
Product packaging, business cards, flyers

10 – 20 cm
3.9 - 7.9 in

2 cm
0.8 in

Magazines, newspapers, catalogs

15.7 - 27.5 in

4 cm – 7 cm
1.57 - 2.75 in

Signages, wall posters, product stands

1 m – 2.5 m
39.4 - 98.4 in

10 cm – 25 cm
3.94 - 9.84 in

TV commercials, shop windows, vehicles

2.25 m – 6 m
78.7 - 236.2 in

22.5 cm – 60 cm
7.9 - 23.6 in

Billboards

7.50 m – 15 m
295.3 - 590.5 in

75 cm – 1.5 m
29.5 - 59 in

By following these guidelines and following the best practices for using QR Codes, you can create user-friendly QR codes and achieve your desired results. After all, the goal is to connect with your audience, not leave them squinting at their phone screens in frustration.
Bonus Tip: When designing your QR code, consider adding a call to action that encourages users to scan it. This will further improve user experience and engagement.

Happy QR coding!
